Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: Security is one of the primary expectations that humans have from governments, significantly influencing human development. In smart cities, the concept of security plays a vital role as a complex and sensitive element in security processes, from threat identification to preservation. Recognizing threats and assessing the sustainability of urban areas, along with timely planning and decision-making, enhances national security and social stability. The aim of this research is to examine the concept and dimensions of threats posed by new technologies in smart cities in Iran from the perspective of experts and specialists.
Methodology: The research is qualitative, employing a phenomenological interpretive approach. Eighteen specialists from leading municipalities in smart city development were selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and continued until theoretical saturation was reached. Data analysis was conducted using MAXQDA software and the thematic analysis method.
Results: The research findings indicated that threats related to new technologies in smart cities can be categorized into four infrastructure components: 1) Institutional Infrastructure (infrastructure sustainability, management mechanisms, staff quality, legal environment), 2) Physical Infrastructure (information technology, data services, technical support, urban networks), 3) Social Infrastructure (information security literacy, psychological factors, personal behavior, social environment), and 4) Economic Infrastructure (advanced communication networks, payment systems, data analysis, research and development centers, smart energy infrastructure).
Conclusion: The findings reveal that, despite technical and physical advancements in smart city development, Iran faces major challenges in social, economic, and institutional infrastructures. Additionally, the results of this study could be beneficial for similar cities in developing countries.
