Analysis of Sermon 51 of Nahj al-Balagha on the Basis of Searl’s Classification of Speech Functions

Abstract

In this article, we intend, to study sermon 51 of Nahj al-Balagha on the basis of speech function analysis used in the field of discourse analysis. Performing an analysis of the above-mentioned sermon on the basis of John Searle’s classification (1991) of speech functions, we found out that in this sermon Imam Ali (A.S.) has made abundant use of expressive and persuasive speech functions and less of emotional speech functions to instigate and embolden his troops in attacking Mu’awiya’s troops to defeat them, which was in fact to take back and free the Furat River from them. Using expressive functions, the Imam intended to create insight in his companions concerning war, death, life, Mu’awiya, and his army so that they would succeed in winning over the enemy’s army. Frequent use of persuasive function through warning, commanding, encouraging, exhorting, reassuring, and giving morale and self-confidence to his troops indicates that the Imam tried to instigate and encourage them to attack the enemy’s army. Basically, war discourse is a kind of discourse that demands much application of these two functions. In this sermon, Imam Ali (A.S.) has not used the obligatory and
