The Socio-Economic Pathology of New Cities in the Context of Social Sustainability (Case Study: Andisheh New City)

Abstract

Social-economic pathologies in new cities pose significant challenges to achieving social sustainability. New cities, designed to alleviate population pressure and urban issues surrounding metropolitan areas, often face problems such as economic inequalities, poverty, dissatisfaction with quality of life, lack of recreational and welfare facilities, environmental pollution, and weak social cohesion. Andisheh New City is not exempt from these issues and suffers from considerable economic and social pressures due to its proximity to Tehran and the overflow of population into it. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the social-economic pathologies of new cities in the context of social sustainability for Andisheh New City.



This research is applied in purpose and descriptive-analytical in nature, conducted through both documentary and field studies. Based on the results obtained from the Delphi method in two phases, several indicators for social sustainability in Andisheh New City were identified and prioritized. In the first phase of Delphi, experts provided a list of potential indicators, which were then summarized and duplicates removed. These indicators were reviewed and scored in the second phase of Delphi. Experts believed that issues related to the decline of social capital and cohesion, security, and citizen participation are among the most significant challenges for social sustainability in the city. Residents also identified issues related to access to urban services, quality of living environment, and public spaces as primary challenges for urban sustainability.

Overall, the perspectives of experts and residents were somewhat different, with certain priorities being distinct, which may stem from the varying experiences and interests of these two groups.
