Exploring the Harms of Lifestyle Among Welfare Organization’s Help-Seekers and Presentation of Solutions (Case study: Help-seekers in Damghan County)

Abstract

 
Identifying the lifestyle harms of the help-seekers and providing solutions for their mitigation is one of the most important goals of the present study, which was conducted using a qualitative method and narrative analysis. To achieve this goal, first, all staff and female heads of households of help seekers supported by the Welfare Organization of Damghan were selected as the statistical population. Then, the purposive sampling method was adopted to select the samples. The sample included 20 female heads of households of help seekers and 10 staff of the Welfare Organization. Data collection was conducted using a semi-structured interview and the findings suggest that physical harms, as a ground for risks, have affected the lives and lifestyles of the help seekers. They face serious psychological injuries including psychological pressure, stress, depression, loneliness, suicide, and low self-confidence, which have overshadowed their lifestyles. In parallel, harms and a lack of skills to deal with them, as well as cultural issues and cultural impoverishment of the families have intensified their social and cultural instability. Inadequate welfare pension and unemployment were the main economic factors identified. The help-seekers acknowledged the institutional and functional weakness of the Welfare Organization. The results reveal an unsustainable lifestyle at the social, economic, and cultural levels. In this regard, solutions are presented to improve lifestyle and alleviate harms, including counseling and education, coordination and cooperation of institutions, employment creation, increasing pensions, and positive representation of the lifestyle of the help-seekers.
